AI & D&D

What fresh wizardry is this?

AI tools, such as Large Language Models (ChatGTP and Bard) and Generative Image Generation tools (Stable Diffusion, Dalle) are revolutionizing almost every industry. Whether you need an image brought to life from your game descriptions, strategy tips on how your party might conquer a specific foe, or a quick limerick for your Bard to belch out a tavern, AI tools can enhance your role playing!

For ChatGTP you enter a "prompt" that describes what you want answered, and how you want the AI to respond (specific style, length, iambic pentameter, etc). You don't need to understand how they work to use them; they're all very approachable—just play around! Below are several prompts and responses produced with ChatGTP.

The Denizen is still waiting on an invite to Stable Diffusion in order to explore this new form of image generation, however nearly all the header images used in the site were produced with generative AI tools (and licensed from Adobe Stock).

Describe an entrance to a dungeon used for a role playing game.
Use descriptive terms and antiquated language.

As the party of adventurers approaches the entrance to the dungeon, they behold a sight of foreboding darkness and ruin. The entrance is carved from rough-hewn stone, with jagged edges and a foreboding aura.

Two large, rusted iron doors, each standing at least ten feet tall, guard the entrance. The doors are ornately adorned with ancient glyphs and symbols, barely visible through the layers of rust and grime that have accumulated over the years.

The door handles, fashioned from wrought iron, are cold to the touch and bear the scars of countless adventurers who have attempted to open them. Above the doors, a weathered stone arch bears the inscription "Beware, all who enter here. For within lies only death and despair."

As the adventurers peer into the darkness beyond the doors, they catch a glimpse of a faint glow emanating from deep within the dungeon. The sound of dripping water echoes ominously through the corridor, accompanied by the distant skittering of unknown creatures.

With a deep breath and a sense of trepidation, the adventurers grip their weapons tightly and slowly push open the heavy doors. The musty smell of damp stone and decay fills their nostrils, as they step into the dark unknown, ready to face whatever horrors await them within the depths of the dungeon.

Write a 250 word limerick about how an adventuring party that included a sorcerer, ranger, cleric, rogue and paladin encountered a mind flayer in the under dark and survived.  Use antiquated language.

In the Underdark, so dim and so deep,
An adventuring party did creep,
With a sorcerer, ranger, cleric, rogue,

And a paladin ready to smite with delight.

A mind flayer they spied, oh so vile,
With tentacles, sharp as a file,
Its psionic powers so fierce,
The party trembled, full of fear.

But the cleric called forth a divine light,
And the sorcerer cast spells with great might,
The ranger's arrows flew straight and true,
And the paladin smote with his sword anew.

The rogue, quick and nimble of feet,
Set traps for the mind flayer to meet,
While the rest focused all of their power,
On that dark and fearsome devourer.

With their combined might, they fought,
And in the end, they prevailed as they ought,
For the mind flayer was brought to its knees,
By this brave and daring company of these.

And so they emerged from the Underdark,
Their mission complete, their victory stark,
A band of heroes, they fought as one,
And survived to adventure yet again.

How would a Druid be useful in a dungeon?

In Dungeons & Dragons, Druids can be a versatile and powerful addition to any party, especially in a dungeon environment. Here are some ways to utilize a Druid in a dungeon setting:

Healing: Druids have access to some powerful healing spells, such as Healing Word and Cure Wounds. They can help keep the party healthy and in fighting shape, especially during extended dungeon crawls.

Area of effect damage: Druids also have access to spells that can deal damage to multiple enemies at once, such as Thunderwave and Moonbeam. These spells can be especially useful in tight corridors and rooms where enemies are clustered together.

Crowd control: Druids have several spells that can help control the battlefield, such as Entangle and Spike Growth. These spells can slow or immobilize enemies, making it easier for the rest of the party to deal with them.

Environmental manipulation: Druids can interact with the natural environment in unique ways, such as creating vines to climb, turning into animals to scout ahead, or using their abilities to shape the terrain to their advantage.

Wild Shape: Druids have the ability to transform into animals through Wild Shape. This can be incredibly useful in a dungeon environment, as they can scout ahead, fit into small spaces, and take on the abilities of different animals to adapt to different situations.

Overall, Druids can be incredibly versatile in a dungeon environment, offering healing, damage, crowd control, environmental manipulation, and scouting abilities. Their versatility and flexibility make them a valuable addition to any party, especially in a dungeon setting where challenges can come in many different forms.
